Milling is the process of reducing material to a desired particle size – from coarse fragments to fine powder.
It is most commonly carried out in rotary ball mills, which operate continuously in open or closed circuits with a classifier. These systems allow grain sizes typically ranging from several tens to several hundred micrometres, with high throughput and stable product quality. They are widely used in the cement, lime, ceramic, and building chemicals industries.
Ultrafine Milling
Ultrafine milling below 10 µm requires the use of specialised technologies such as vibratory ball mills. In these machines, vibration energy is transferred directly to the grinding media (steel, ceramic, or metal oxide balls), enabling much higher grinding intensity than in conventional rotary mills. This allows the production of materials with extremely high specific surface area, which is valuable in chemical synthesis, pigment and catalyst production, paints, and specialised additives.
Key Advantages of Modern Milling Systems
Precise particle size control
- From hundreds down to a few micrometres.
Increased active surface area
- Enhancing reactivity of raw materials.
Better homogenization and dispersion
- In blended products.
Improved optical, rheological, and reactive properties
- Especially in ultrafine milling applications.
Tailoring products for high-tech industries
- Such as technical ceramics, catalysis, pigments, and powder coatings.
