Storage is a key stage in the technological chain, involving the temporary retention of raw materials, intermediates, or finished products to ensure uninterrupted operation of the plant.
Depending on the nature of the material, different solutions are used: silos for bulk materials or steel tanks for liquids and suspensions.
The design of storage equipment is tailored to the properties of the stored materials – taking into account bulk density, moisture content, tendency to cake, chemical aggressiveness, and dust explosion risk.
Therefore, solutions such as optimized hopper angles, aeration systems, vibrating dischargers, anti-adhesive coatings, heating or thermal insulation, and wear- or corrosion-resistant components are commonly used.
Loading and unloading systems are an integral part of storage infrastructure: screw, bucket, belt, and drag-chain conveyors, as well as pneumatic conveying.
These systems enable smooth discharge and controlled feeding of materials to subsequent process stages. Monitoring and control are equally important – level probes, moisture and temperature sensors, gas or CO detection systems (for biomass), and ATEX-compliant explosion protection for hazardous materials.
Key Advantages of the Storage Process
Production continuity
- Independent of supply interruptions or delays.
Logistic buffering
- Enables balancing between production and distribution.
Material parameter stabilization
- e.g., drying, batch homogenization.
Increased installation safety
- Through monitoring and protective systems.
Flexible assortment management
- With fast product changeovers.
Reduced losses and dust emissions
- Thanks to hermetic enclosures and dedusting systems.
